That meant leaving the house with no real plan beyond curiosity and adventure, trusting that the day would take shape once I was in it. When I was young, I set out on bicycle. I would cover miles of quiet, dirt roads, with the smell of soils and fast growing vines, making an impressionable mark in memory. I found fishing ponds tucked behind rows of Cabernet, places I only discovered by riding until something caught my eye. When I grew older still, riding an ATV with a .22 rifle in hand, the sense of independence deepened. The pursuits changed—targets, squirrels, jackrabbits—but the purpose was the same: motion, solitude, and the freedom of wide-open space. There, I was present. Our home on Rutherford Road offered little in the way of land to explore. There were no back acres to envelop me, no creeks or hills that belonged to us. So, freedom to pass from place to place came by way of asking permission from the many people who owned land like us throughout Napa Valley. I learned the names early: Andy Beckstoffer. Chuck Carpy of Freemark Abbey. Pat Garvey at Flora Springs. Justin Meyer of Silver Oak. Dennis Groth. Stan Teaderman. Lori Woods of Woods Ranch. Tony Peju. Legendary Cabernet farmers, yes—but to me, they were gatekeepers of possibility. They didn’t have to say yes. But as the valley was then, they always did. With a nod, a wave, or a simple “careful out there kid” their vineyards opened up into entire worlds for me. Rows became corridors. Creeks became hiding places. Dirt roads became so familiar, I would see a map in my head, as though it were my vast territory and I was its guardian. I rode, walked, fished, hunted, and wandered across some of the most important ground in American wine—not as a future winemaker or farmer, but simply as a curious, adventurous, outdoors kid. Those days were an education no classroom could offer. I learned respect for land that belonged to us. I learned patience. I learned how silence can be a companion and a teacher. And I learned that generosity—especially quiet, unspoken respect—has a deliberate way of shaping a person long before they realize it’s happening. This is where my sense of adventure was born and has remained. Nothing makes my work day better than starting out at dawn in the vineyards. Looking back now, what felt like asking for permission to cross was a lesson in trust and respect. It was an incredible upbringing—one rooted in land, and in a Napa Valley that still allowed a kid to roam and dream. That memory inspired me to name Venge’s newest Cabernet Sauvignon, “Permission to Cross” – internally known as PX2. This is a wine that ushers in a moment in our winery’s history as we are entering an era of great vintages in a row. Not in the history of the valley have I witnessed three vintages of greatness. The idea was to shadow him in order to gain insight into the routines of an elite winemaking consultant during the COVID-19 pandemic — how was his already high-stakes work complicated during this challenging time, and how did he manage to deliver for the clients who had entrusted him with their most important projects, as both consultant and collaborator? The first answer is that a global pandemic was the least of Venge’s worries. It’s easy enough to social distance out in the vineyards, as well as mask up and take your space in various winery facilities. (Some of Venge’s consulting clients have brick-and-mortar wineries and some work via custom crush.) There are certainly large questions about business decisions to be made, given the uncertain nature of luxury wine sales now, but the bigger problem on Venge’s hands this day was smoke. The 2020 series of fires in Napa and Sonoma started dangerously close to harvest time for many vineyards, and we set out to investigate which, if any, of the vineyards he has longstanding contracts with would have any grapes to harvest at all. I learned a great deal during my 12-hour outing with Venge, punctuated by a lovely lunch at [Auberge du Soleil](https://aubergeresorts.com/aubergedusoleil/ "https://aubergeresorts.com/aubergedusoleil/") — a perfectly cooked burger with a pre-release bottle of [Eleven Eleven’s](https://www.elevenelevenwines.com/ "https://www.elevenelevenwines.com/") 2018 powerhouse Cab, of which Venge is admittedly proud. It’s a juicy, brawnily structured wine that will age beautifully for many years to come, and it was during this lunch preview that I understood what’s in it for him: He really likes making other people happy. He’s the perfect winemaking consultant for brands with a clear vision of what they’re looking for because he has both the connections to the best grapes and the vinicultural know-how to pull it off in the bottle. The trajectory of the 2020 harvest has been a challenging one. What’s the big deal about a little residual smoke in the air? Well, it turns out that you can’t taste smoke taint in the fruit itself (we tried). This sneaky defect appears on the palate only once fermentation is well underway. And while there are laboratories that can test for smoke taint — we spent all day gathering samples from some of the world’s most famous vineyards (including Platt and Beckstoffer To Kalon) for just that purpose — Venge wouldn’t get results back in time to decide whether or not to pick these grapes for his clients. The alternative? To “bulk them out.” This often happens when grapes are deemed unsuitable for top brands and sold at inexpensive bulk prices to make inferior wine. (Luckily, all of the vineyard owners are covered by crop insurance, but the losses are still tremendous, given the millions of dollars at stake.) We stopped in to one of his clients’ wineries to taste some grapes already undergoing fermentation. And while I have a decent palate, I couldn’t really pick up on smoke taint, though Venge said he could after a few seconds in the mouth. I did get a hint of possible taint in the retro-nasal assessment. What was clear is that 2020 would be a difficult one, with tough picking calls and many grapes left on the ground. We ended the day in the Venge Vineyards barrel room, tasting through about 20 samples in various stages of development — all beautiful representations of their terroir in their respective vintages. Venge was in his happy place, after a stressful day of the kind he is accustomed to navigating with grace and good humor. Not two weeks after our day together, Venge faced yet another test: The Glass Fire came within mere feet of his winery building. The entire driveway burned, along with two neighbors’ homes, and Venge watched as members of the Fremont Fire Department saved his structures. He ended that day expressing his gratitude and, ultimately, feeling lucky. And I wasn’t surprised, as I had quickly come to know that looking at the positive side of a difficult situation is inherent in Venge’s character. The elevation ranges from 250 to 1050 feet above sea level. The area faces southwest towards San Pablo Bay ands the climate is moderately warm with afternoon marine winds cooling the warmer air surrounding the hillsides. The rocky soils promote low to moderate vigor creating balanced hillside fruit with velvet-like tannins. ##### WINEMAKER’S RECORD: This wine captures all the great reasons to produce Cabernet Franc. The dark ruby-red color sets this wine apart and immediately tells you it is a pure example of the varietal. Fragrant aromas of sweet tobacco and cedar smoke integrate with elements of dried rose petal, blackberry and truffles inform the first impressions. There is wonderful richness and depth to the palate where ripe blackberry and spicy clove flavors are lifted by touches of black licorice and star anise. The hills were planted to vine by early German settlers in the late 1800’s and abandoned at the onset of Prohibition, where the ground lay fallow until 1995 when Dr. Jan Krupp purchased the 1,100+ acres that stretches from the southern edge of Pritchard Hill overlooking Oakville to the westernmost regions of the Atlas Peak Appellation. Today, nearly 600 acres are planted to various varieties, with Syrah planted in the highest elevations. Our long-term contract is on the I-4 Block, that sits on the highest peak of the vineyard, adjacent Pritchard Hill. It is perhaps, if not the most, ideal area for growing mountain Syrah. ##### WINEMAKER’S RECORD: Goodness, this is pure, volcanic mountain Syrah at its finest! This wine possesses a bold, deep, dark color that opens the door to an array of black fruit aromatics. Cassis, blackberry, warm toasted bread and French Oak vanillin all fill the glass with purpose. The Luvisi ancestors bought the land in the late 1800s and the Zinfandel vines, some of the oldest in the valley, were planted in 1908. The vineyard is head trained and dry farmed and sits on a gentle, south-facing loam alluvium of Pleasanton gravel. **Moss Creek Vineyard**, Capell Valley, Napa Valley (Old Vines | 50+ Years) The Moskowite family has been farming here for over 90 years, with 185 acres of vineyards planted since 1974. Located in Capell Valley, a small mountain valley located in the Napa Valley hills directly east of Oakville, nestled against Atlas Peak, the vineyard ranges in elevation from 835 to 900 feet. These 42 vineyards are planted in a well-drained, loam soil that is riddled with rock and obsidian. The vineyard maturity, soil types and estate farming practices combine to produce exceptional low yielding fruit. The cooler climate provided by the mountain elevation brings on a longer growing season. Therefore, the grapes have an extended hang time on the vine, allowing the sugars to ripen slowly prior to harvest. This produces outstanding mature fruit, adding character and rich complexity to the wine. **Korte Ranch Vineyard**, Saint Helena, Napa Valley (Old Vines |70+ Years) Korte Ranch is located just north of the town of St. Helena along the Napa River on Ehlers Lane. It is truly one of the most distinctive and classic Zinfandel vineyards left in Napa Valley with the vines we source from being a minimum of 70 years old. It has been family owned for four generations and was a bonded winery before prohibition. The gnarly old head trained, dry farmed vines are planted where the eastern and western hillsides meet. This beautiful property is perfectly suited for high quality grape growing from the cool morning and nighttime temperatures to the loose soils of rocky loam which help make wine of unique and bold character. **Monte Rosso Vineyard**, Moon Mountain, Sonoma County (Old Vines |100+ Years) Emanuel Goldstein and his business partner Benjamin Dreyfus were business partners in San Francisco in the early 1880s when they decided to move out to Sonoma Valley and begin cultivating and planting Monte Rosso (red earth) Vineyard. The first vines were planted in 1886, with some of the original Zinfandel planted during that period still producing fruit today. Prohibition had taken its toll on the family and the family made the decision to sell to Louis M. Martini in 1938, who had his namesake winery located in St. Helena. Three generations of the Martini Family continued to farm the vineyard up until 2002 when the vineyard and Louis M. Martini winery was sold to E.&J. Gallo Vineyards. An altruistic production effort that says “Thank you” for making our dreams come true. ##### WINEMAKER’S RECORD This is an aromatically expressive wine that opens with anise, Berch bark, ripe cassis and blackberries, roasted coffee, blue herbs and a slight breeze of barrel vanillin. The palate is polished and primed for everyday enjoyment, featuring cranberry, black currant, blackberry and black cherry all intertwined into full-bodied deliciousness. Benefitting from the cool temperatures of the vineyard, this wine opens with a nose full of peach, honeydew and mandarin fruit. Following shortly behind is chalky, wet stone minerals and lemon/lime zest. The fresh fruit and minerality carry through to the palate and are presented in a lean and smooth texture. The citrus notes are more prominent here and expand to include crisp granny smith apple. Light and refreshing, the wine finishes with lip-smacking acidity. ##### The Vineyards The southern appellation of Los Carneros is perfectly suited to grow Vermentino. Coastal and bay influences provide cool Pacific winds are the perfect counter to the powerful Napa sun. Warm days and cool, cool nights create that perfect climate to allow the grapes to ripen but all the while maintain their balancing acidity. Growing on soft, rolling hills, the vines are planted in shallow clay soils, known for their poor drainage and low nutrients. ##### In the Cellar The grapes are picked at night and arrive at the winery in the early morning hours. Once they are weighted in, the grapes are gently pressed and are placed in tank to settle. A slow, cold fermentation in stainless steal tank took place over 45 days, allowing the development of aromatics in the wine. Once primary fermentation completed, a cold settling was once again induced to prohibit secondary (malolactic) fermentation. Our Vermentino is withheld from any oak barrel aging to maintain the delicate fruit and preserve the grape’s natural acidity. This 2017 red is delightfully showy with aromas of raspberry jam, sweet alcohols, cotton candy and Bing cherry. The palate is utterly decadent with black pepper, chewy red preserves, grape jelly and a touch of sour cherry. Although the acid and tannin balance appear in this wine, they are not aggressive and will prove very useful in keeping the pulse of this Zinfandel going deep into ageing. ##### The Vineyards The entire 19 year old Zinfandel block exists in two rows on our Oakville Estate vineyard, at a mere ¼ acre. Using traditional techniques of dry farming and head and trellis training, the vines were able to achieve incredible depth and complexity. At harvest the fruit looks and feels like it has given absolutely everything it has to offer the vintage. The mature fruit was hand harvested into half-ton bins. We wait to pick until we can identify the grapes appearing more like golf balls than perfectly round berries. Combined yields were small and could barely be squeezed out to yield 2 barrels. ##### In the Cellar After careful cluster sorting, the sweet but tired black bunches were destemmed into open top, insulated bins where fermentation took place for nearly 15 days. Gentle “punch downs” by hand were employed to gently homogenize the fermentation two times daily. At the proper time during fermentation, the fruit was lightly pressed as not to supply too much tannin and astringency, and then put direct to cask. The wine was matured on gross yeast lees settlings for 10 months in three 100% new Virginia Oak by Nadalie Cooperage. Neither the removal of tannin via fining nor any sulfites were employed during the barrel ageing of this wine. Sulfites were only added prior to the bottling. Robust, savory, and gorgeous are all words that pop into mind with this year’s Merlot. A beautiful purple and dark red hue that clings to the glass drawing one’s curiosity. The aromatics are highly perfumed with clove, ripe blueberry, lavender and black currants. The palate is massive and expansive with no pocket of the mouth unfilled or escaping this wine’s delicious composition. The flavors expand over the front and through to the back of the palate presenting a lengthy and gratifying sensation. Anticipated maturity is 2020 to 2029. ##### The Vineyards With the replanting of our Oakville Estate Merlot underway, we turn our attention to Calistoga and the famed Kenefick Ranch. Harvest took place on October 3rd with stellar results. The 2016 vintage marked a turning point in the drought with winter rains supplying vineyards with a much needed reprieve from severely dry conditions. The result was a fruit set near normal levels. The vineyard at Kenefick Ranch is among one of the oldest, continuously farmed vineyards in the area and sits on an alluvial fan of volcanic ash. Hot days and cool nights define this location where conditions are perfect for ripening Bordeaux varieties. ##### In the Cellar The fruit was destemmed into a combination of small stainless steel tank fermenters and open top *barriques*. Time on skins lasted 12 to 27 days. The fruit was then separated to “free run” and “light press” fractions. The Merlot was aged in 60% new, tight grained, French Oak barrels for 18 months. We employ a variety of cooperages for Merlot including Boutes, Sylvain, Taransaud, Gamba and Alain Foquet. 100% native, spontaneous yeast and malolactic fermentations were also key ingredients in the making of this wine. The gentle use of gravity flow winemaking, whenever possible, is carefully exercised throughout the making of this and every Venge wine. Situated at the gateway of the Napa River headwaters and the alluvial base of Mount Saint Helena, we find magmatic forces that jettison healing hot springs, mineral rich soils, and a slightly warmer than average growing environment. Ideal conditions for producing perfection in the glass!* ##### THE PURPOSE: The vineyard at Kenefick Ranch is among one of the oldest, continuously farmed vineyards in the area and sits on an alluvial fan of volcanic ash. Hot days and cool nights define this location where conditions are perfect for ripening Bordeaux varieties. We chose to highlight the Calistoga District with the production of this wine due to its distinct variation in soil topography (from gravelly bed, to benchland tufa, to mountain volcanics) and growing climate, at 15 degrees warmer on average than the southernmost Carneros District. This is a heartier, more moderately tannic style of wine due to the heavy influence of volcanic alluvial bench and gravelly soils in this wine. Fans of old-school producers such as Diamond Creek Vineyard and Reverie will enjoy that style influence which forms the base of this wine. The bottom layer is complemented by the softening and ripening effects in the mid-layers we find coming from the Kenefick Ranch Vineyard’s growing environment, where optimal ripeness is achieved each year within this section of the valley. What a wonderful addition to our single-vineyard, allocated lineup! ##### WINEMAKER’S RECORD: This wine begins with wonderful purple color and aromatics that fall within the black fruit spectrum. Blackberry preserve and currant syrup fill the senses and pique curiosity. As this wine opens up, the background notes of sweet vanillin and earth come forth. The palate is firm and polished with a wonderful glide from start to finish. Boy this wine has some power! Cassis, anise, dried currant, blackberry and black cherry are all intertwined. The acid and tannins are perfectly balanced, creating a savory texture that causes a desire for more. The black sheep scion of a Texas oil family, Hudson was a gardener, vegetarian and yogi, more taken with long-handled hoes than longhorns. He’d been introduced to Maynard Amerine, the UC Davis wine scholar, who took Hudson to Napa Valley. Hudson surveyed the hilltop vista at Sterling Vineyards and the sweeping view at Robert Mondavi Winery, and was struck silent. Almost 40 years later, Hudson, has become one of Northern California’s pre-eminent grape growers. The Chardonnay from his ranch has long been treasured for its richness and depth. There’s also Syrah, Merlot and 14 other varieties among his 160 acres of grapes. Hudson went on to study winemaking at UC Davis, where he was part of a class that included notable vintners John Kongsgaard, Randall Grahm and Tim Mondavi. He left an impression on his classmates – a young man who had become obsessed with the glory of Burgundy, enough so that he left his studies to seek out his own vineyard land. In 1981, having already scouted in Oregon, Hudson discovered a 2,000-acre ranch in eastern Carneros and scooped it up for $600 an acre. The parcel was mostly scrubby upland rising from Carneros Creek, but a few stretches were suited to wine grapes. At the time, Carneros was barely known as a wine region, but Hudson deduced the potential of his neighborhood. The Winery Lake vineyard next door was renowned for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Not far away, Stanly Ranch had survived Prohibition and then been adopted by Louis Martini and Beaulieu Vineyard. Hudson harvested his first grape crop in 1983. His first buyer was Kongsgaard, who was working at Newton Vineyard. Other wineries came knocking, including Frog’s Leap, Saintsbury, Arietta, and Aubert. We are thrilled to have a small slice of history and cherish the privilege of Lee’s presence and grape growing prowess. ##### WINEMAKER’S RECORD: The complex nose is expansive with enticing aromas of freshly roasted coffee, leather, clove, and delicate hints of lilac and lavender are followed by rich scents of dried blackberries and mulberries. The palate is concentrated, yet lively, especially across the mid-palate. Intense flavors of black cherry, blueberry, and black currants are interwoven with notes of gravel and savory dried mushrooms. The tannins are chewy and lingering, balanced by lifting acidity. When Kirk’s mother passed away unexpectedly in 2011, our collective hearts broke. We immediately began pondering an appropriate homage to Dianna Lynn Venge, the mother of our winery, and the seed investor in Kirk’s winemaking dream. More than anything, we wanted to propose and produce something special for such a beautiful family story. What came from that initial thought was a winemaking project to produce the best three barrels (75 cases) of Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon possible, dedicating the work to Kirk’s mother. A wine named appropriately, “DLCV.” DLCV is the ultimate benchmark of greatness in our cellar. If it is not considered a “perfect” rendition of our efforts from the vintage, it is not produced. The vineyard is bordered by HdV’s Hyde Vineyard and Beaulieu’s Vineyard No.9 on Old Sonoma Road. Twenty-nine acres of vines (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) were already planted but most of these vines were afflicted with a fungi disease, Eutypa (otherwise known as the Dead-arm Dieback) causing trunks or arms of the vines to essentially rot and die. Rather than pulling all of these vines out, their vineyard management team decided to keep the rootstock, cut off the trunk just above the soil and allow a bud from the varietal to grow, training it into a new trunk and then trellising it when it became of size. The Brown Ranch’s hillside alluvial soils, with Dijon Clone 76 set atop pre-existing rootstock, make a Chardonnay that is worthy of producing under the Venge name. ##### WINEMAKER’S RECORD: This wine is stylish and freshly balanced, featuring a light, pale straw presence in the glass with a bouquet of fresh orange citrus, toasted pine nuts, mild allspice, rocky flints, and toasted oak. Indeed, the Frediani Vineyard next door to us still possesses vines that are 80 to 110 years old, a testament to the fortitude and the traditions espoused by those early pioneers. Calistoga is today its own AVA, bearing distinction for its climate, its aspect, and its soils. The soils are what drove the naming of our Calistoga Estate the “Bone Ash Vineyard.” As the season wears on and the soil dries out, light plumes of volcanic ash will dust up, looking like the ashes of the bones of those early settlers. Our Calistoga Estate “Bone Ash Vineyard” is one of three estate vineyards we own and farm in Napa Valley. The cane pruned vines are comprised of Cabernet Clones #7 and #8. We employ a minimalist approach on our Calistoga Estate, with organic and regenerative farming of the property. ##### WINEMAKER’S RECORD: This wine begins with concentrated purple color and blue fruit aromatics. There is no pocket of the mouth unfilled or escaping this wine’s sumptuous composition. ##### The Vineyards Located north of the town of Yountville in the Oakville AVA, Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper was originally part of a large piece of land owned by George C Yount, from whom the town of Yountville takes its name Purchased by Charles Hopper and given to his daughter, Missouri, in 1877, the land was planted to wine grapes and, as much of the Napa land was at the time, prunes and walnuts. In 1960, the land was purchased by Bruce Kelham as part of the historic Vine Hill Ranch. Purchased by Beckstoffer Vineyards from the Kelham family in 1996, the vineyard is today planted with multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. From the vineyard to the bottle, our Arsenal Malbec honors our limitless approach to hitting our intended target. Named after Sieur Malbek, who planted the grape in the Medoc in the 1700s, the Malbec grape variety is over 2,000 years old and originated in Cahors, France in the 1500s. Malbec was once one of the most widely planted grapes in France. Even today, Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) regulations for Cahors wines require a minimum content of 70% Malbec. It’s also one of the six grapes used to create red Bordeaux blends, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenère. Pour me another glass, please! ##### The Vineyards Annapurna Vineyard is in the Stags Leap District, where the Yountville Cross Road meets the Silverado Trail. Often referred to as a “valley within a valley,” Stags Leap is bounded on the east by the towering Stags Leap Palisades and to the west by gently rolling hills. The rock facade of the palisades reflects the heat of the sun onto the vineyards below, causing temperatures to rise more quickly than in neighboring vineyards. As afternoon draws to a close, the hills funnel the cool, marine air north from the San Pablo Bay through the SLD corridor. This cooling effect reduces nighttime temperatures, allowing the grapes to achieve an excellent balance of acid and sugar. The property is about twenty acres with four acres planted with Cabernet Sauvignon vines that are quadrilateral cordon pruned and quadrilateral shoot positioned. The vines are 25+ years old. ##### IN THE CELLAR The grapes were hand-picked early and cool in the morning, then immediately whole berry destemmed, given an initial cold soak and fermented via native yeast in open top fermenters for 19 days. The grape pomace was lightly pressed and kept separate as not to supply too much tannin in the finished wine. During the secondary fermentation, native malolactic was encouraged. The barrel program is 100% French oak with 60% entirely new Francois Frères from the tight grained Voges forest in both medium and heavy toast. maturation. ### Farming Practices Organic, regenerative farming is at the core of our farming practices: No herbicides or pesticides will ever touch our land. We utilize natural composting and diverse cover crops to produce a diverse, vibrant soil base from which the vines can thrive. We believe that healthy soils produce healthy vines, and that healthy vines produce brilliant fruit from which we can refine our craft in the cellar. Both traditional and progressive wine production techniques are embraced in the cellar, although we remain focused on our core belief: only fruit grown from select vineyards that has been handled gently and naturally produces wine worthy of bottling under the Venge family name. ### Red Wine Production **All Hands On Deck:** Hand sorting is a family tradition and a required harvest activity for all at Venge Vineyards. **Go With Gravity:** Using a gentle, state of the art *Pellenc* berry sorting system allows the removal of any additional, unwanted raisins, shot berries, pips, and leftover foliage from the in-sorted fruit. This secondary sorting system assures only ripened, healthy fruit makes it into the tanks. A conveyor belt gently transfers the fruit directly into each tank via gravity in preparation for pre-fermentation cold soaking. This eliminates the use of pumps that may serrate the skins and break the seeds. This prevents imbalances in phenolic extractions and leaching of seed tannins into the free-run juice. Ours is a natural winemaking approach, where minimal use of chemicals combined with a personal touch makes the difference. We gently hand-rack each wine so that every wine in the barrel has had human contact throughout its maturation before being bottled. It is this labor intensive, dedicated approach by our Cellar team that sets our wines apart. Combined, our Cellar team has more than 100 years of cellar experience. **Chill:** In the tank, we cold soak the must and free-run juice to gently extract additional flavor and color pigments from the skins. **Go Native:** Utilizing a combination of cultured and wild yeasts for primary and secondary fermentation is standard doctrine. Fermentation is conducted in a combination of hand-crafted, Italian stainless steel tanks, concrete vats, and open top oak barriques. Once fermentation begins, gentle diaphragm pumps are used to move the free-run juice over the must cap to assure a thorough soaking for extraction of vital phenolics. Extended macerations are common, generally lasting 18 to 27 days. **Barrel Down:** A combination of new and once-used French oak barrels are used for red wine aging. The exception is our Scout’s Honor, which is aged in a combination of new American oak and used French oak barrels. Our red wines typically age 16 to 27 months in oak, depending on the varietal and the vintage. **Bottle As Is:** Natural is better. Therefore, our red wines are bottled unfiltered and unfined. ![](https://vengevineyards.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/kirkvenge_blending.jpg) ### White Wine Production **Press The Flesh:** We whole-cluster press our whites and transport the juice via diaphragm pumps to hand-crafted, Italian stainless steel tanks. We implement a 48-hour oxidative settling to allow heavy phenolics to fall out and rack the wine to prevent browning of the whites. A combination of cultured and native yeasts are allowed to inoculate fermentation. **Stir It Up:** The fermented wine is moved to neutral French oak barrels and allowed to undergo partial malolactic fermentation. Allowing only partial secondary fermentation preserves the wines natural acids, adding necessary verve and backbone to our white wines. We sur lie age our whites for 6 to 9 months, stirring the barrels weekly for three months to fill out the mid-palate of the wine. --- ### [Driving Force](https://vengevineyards.com/our-vocation/driving-force/) **Published:** March 26, 2014 **Author:** Venge Vineyards **Content:** ![VengeVineyard_icon](https://vengevineyards.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/VengeVineyard_icon.svg "VengeVineyard_icon") Driving Force Farming and winemaking is in the blood of Owner and Winemaker, Kirk Venge, “When I was growing up, working in the vineyard and winery gave me a wonderful sense of partnership in my family’s way of life; it was hard work, but I loved it.” Born and raised in Rutherford, in Napa Valley, surrounded by budding and iconic vineyards and wineries, Kirk Venge was instilled with a pursuit of excellence in his vocation. He learned the rhythm of winemaking as a young man, helping in the family vineyard throughout the growing season, experiencing the labor of harvest, the love of crush, working alongside his family in the winery. Kirk earned his degree in Viticulture and Enology at the prestigious University of California, Davis, graduating in 1998. He worked diligently during summer internships as the experimental winemaker for Mumm, Napa Valley, where he focused on producing still Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. A post-graduation harvest in New Zealand and travels in the great wine regions of Europe would provide him with the skills to lead production on the Venge Family Reserve wines and several budding brands in which he would consult as winemaker. It was in 1999 that Kirk took over winemaking from his Father, Nils Venge, at Venge Vineyards. In time, his style would develop into a fuller, riper style of winemaking, that would grow his reputation as an up-and-coming winemaker worth watching. In 2008, Kirk Venge was offered the opportunity to purchase the Venge Vineyards brand and with the help his mother, Candy Venge, purchased ten acres of vineyards on the eastern bench of the Calistoga AVA. He quickly set about building his state-of-the-art winery and completing his first harvest at the new location in 2010. All the while, he was experimenting with Sonoma County varietals with a focus on single vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that would compete with the best examples from the region. As such, Croix Estate was born in 2012 with the production and bottling of 50 cases of Chardonnay and 50 cases of Pinot Noir. A fortuitous moment came about when the Robert Rue Winery came up for sale in 2016, in the heart of Russian River Valley. It was an opportunity he did not miss. After two years of renovations, the winery opened for visitation in 2018, and today has a cult following among many Burgundian variety enthusiasts. farming one’s land. It is gritty and challenging, and always in service to what Mother Nature dictates without guarantees of success. This is our calling, our pride, our joy, and the foundation upon which we pursue our purpose. Pronounced (ven-ghee), our family has farmed *vitis vinifera* varieties in Napa Valley for over half a century. It is a classic, All-American journey that began when Knud Venge emigrated from Denmark to the United States in the early 1900’s. Knud’s son, Per Venge, found his passion in the wine and spirits industry and started Vencom Imports, focusing on the importation of Western European fine wines and spirits. It was Per’s son, Nils Venge, who left the family business in the 1960’s with a vision to study viticulture at UC Davis and establish the family name as an icon within the Napa Valley winegrowing community. Along the way, Nils would meet and marry the love of his life, Dianna Lynn Venge, known affectionately as Candy, who would convince her family to lend them the cede capital to start a winery within the newly budding, post-prohibition Northern California wine country. Nils and Dianna’s viticultural roots sprouted in 1976 with the birth of their son, Kirk Venge, and the purchase of a 17-acre vineyard in the heart of Oakville, adjacent to Groth Vineyards. It was here that Saddleback Cellars was established, casting the family among the winemaking pioneers of Napa Valley. Kirk Venge, gravitated to winemaking at an early age, working summers in the vineyards of the family estate, earning his degree in Viticulture & Oenology at UC Davis in 1999. He proved to be as talented a winemaker as his father, making wines in his own style, with a vision to build on the family legacy. In 2008, Kirk achieved his lifelong dream and acquired full ownership of Venge Vineyards.
